Semester Exchange with North Harbor College and Instituto do Litoral

The study-away office has signed a three-campus exchange for 2027–28 with North Harbor College in Seattle and with Instituto do Litoral, the partner that staffs our Lisbon Study Center. Forty-eight AES students will be admitted. Each student spends one term in Calder Bay, one term at North Harbor, and one term in Lisbon. The degree is an AES degree. Credits are recorded by our registrar before the student leaves.

Who the partners are

North Harbor College is a teaching college on the Seattle ship canal. The exchange uses its coastal-engineering studio and its education placements in harbor-adjacent school districts. Instituto do Litoral runs the building at Rua das Ondas 18 with our director there, Dr. Inês Carvalho. AES has rented that floor since 2016. The new agreement adds their students to our courses, up to twelve a year, on the same tuition-waiver terms we offer theirs.

How to be considered

  • Be an AES undergraduate with at least 48 credits finished by the end of spring 2027.
  • Hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Have the field-term plan signed by your advisor. The exchange does not replace the field term unless the advisor writes that the Lisbon or Seattle placement satisfies it.
  • File the study-away form by March 1, 2027. The office admits 48 students and keeps a list of 12 alternates.

Cost

Students pay AES tuition. Housing in Seattle and Lisbon is not included. The office publishes a housing range each January; for 2026–27 the Lisbon room the center holds is €640 a month, and the North Harbor rooms are $980 a month. Aid that a student already has continues. There is no separate “global scholars” bonus attached to this exchange.

Questions go to [email protected]. The office does not take applications by stopping a staff member on the jetty path.
